
Dr Mark Butler Winner: Leadership in Secondary Science Teaching, NSW Scientist of the Year 2008 Awards
Dr Mark Butler is the Head Teacher of Science at Gosford High School and has been remarkably successful in switching students onto science.
Dr Butler was nominated for the Leadership in Secondary Science Teaching category award by a group of grateful Physics PhD students who were influenced by his brilliant classroom teaching and enthusiasm during their time at Gosford High.
The programs introduced by Dr Butler at Gosford High School have led to a 50% increase in the number of students taking senior science over the past decade.
Dr Butler is an active member of the professional and academic community and has written many books, articles and papers, given lectures and workshops, and has developed a range of innovative resources that have influenced science curriculum development and teaching methods.
Dr Butler’s contribution to the quality of science teaching and learning in NSW has resulted in many inspired students pursuing careers in science and engineering. His commitment is recognised not only by students but fellow teachers and academics.
He was co-opted by the Board of Studies to help evaluate and review the new Senior Physics and Junior Science Syllabuses, and in 2005 and 2006 provided advice on Science Education Policy federally.
Dr Butler has been appointed to various science education advisory boards and committees and received the prestigious Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Secondary Science Teaching and Educational Leadership in 2004.
