The Office for Science and Medical Research is responsible for the following legislation:
Human Cloning and Other Prohibited Practices Act 2003 - An Act to adopt in this State a uniform Australian approach to the prohibition of human cloning and certain other practices associated with reproductive technology.
Research Involving Human Embryos (New South Wales) Act 2003 - An Act to apply the Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002 of the Commonwealth as a law of this State. The object of this Act is to adopt in this State a uniform Australian approach to the regulation of activities that involve the use of certain human embryos created by assisted reproductive technology.
The Cancer Institute Act 2003 (NSW) (joint responsibility with NSW Health) - An Act relating to the constitution, objectives and functions of the Cancer Institute (NSW).

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research Act 1984 (NSW) - An Act to constitute the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and to define its functions; and for other purposes.
The Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology Act 1985 - To establish the Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology for the purposes of scientific research into cancer and related diseases.

New South Wales Human Tissue Act 1983 - The Human Tissue Act deals with the use of tissue, including blood, from either a living or dead body for medical scientific or therapeutic purposes. Specific issues included in the Act are: donations of tissue by living adults and children; blood donations; removal of tissue after death; post-mortem examinations; and prohibition of the trade in tissue.
Gene Technology (New South Wales) Act 2003 - An Act to apply the Gene Technology Act 2000 and the Gene Technology (Licence Charges) Act 2000 of the Commonwealth as a law of this State.
Gene Technology (GM Crop Moratorium) Act 2003 - An Act to enable a moratorium to be imposed on the cultivation of certain genetically modified plants.
New South Wales Public Health Act 1991 - The primary NSW legislation relating to a range of public health issues including infectious diseases, provision of health services and vaccine immunisations.
NSW Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act - An Act to provide for the protection of personal information and for the protection of the privacy of individuals generally.
