Building NSW science research capacity

Eight NSW-based consortia, bidding under the current Australian Research Council (ARC) Centres of Excellence funding round, will share up to $3.9 million from the NSW Government, should they be successful in their national funding bids. The level of NSW support is to be decided on merit and will fund research in areas such as robots, photovoltaics, and biotechnology.

Minister for Science and Medical Research Frank Sartor said it was the first commitment under the Science Leveraging Fund, announced by the Premier Morris Iemma in March. “The NSW Government announced it would make $40 million available over four years, in an unprecedented boost to cutting-edge research,” Mr Sartor said.

“This is a unique program which makes NSW-based organisations even more competitive in their bids for other external funding. It strengthens their case, by showing they can independently secure funding from a range of sources. The Science Leveraging Fund is a strategic investment in the State’s research sector that will help create new jobs, new skills, and new industries,” Mr Sartor said.
