NSW research centres secure funding

Eight of NSW's leading research centres have secured continued Commonwealth funding with the support of the NSW Government. Up to $3.9 million had been allocated from the State Government’s $40 million Science Leveraging Fund last September to support the NSW research centres in their Commonwealth bids.

The Australian Research Council confirmed on 13 March 2007 that the eight NSW centres had successfully secured funding under its Centres of Excellence Program. The news was another win for the NSW Government’s $40 million Science Leveraging Fund, which was established at the last budget to help NSW research centres secure Commonwealth and international funds. Up to $8 million has been earmarked from the NSW Science Leveraging Fund to help our research centres participate successfully in the Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence Program.

The eight NSW-based research centres winning additional Commonwealth funding conduct world leading R&D in priority sectors identified under the NSW Government Statement on Innovation as most likely to produce benefits for the NSW economy: advanced manufacturing, logistics, financial services, digital media, and resources.

The successful centres are:

The Australian Research Council news follows an announcement at the end of 2006 that four other research centres with major presence in NSW had won over $75 million in funding under the Commonwealth’s Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Programme. They were the Capital Markets CRC, Smart Services CRC, the CRC for Sheep Industry Innovations, and the Hearing CRC. These four CRCs were also assisted with nearly $3 million under the NSW Science Leveraging Fund to help strengthen their business cases to the Commonwealth.
