Australia & New Zealand Spinal Cord Society 2007 Annual Scientific Meeting (ANZSCoS)

Four Seasons Hotel, Sydney
Thursday 1 November 2007 - Saturday 3 November 2007

The ANZSCoS 2007 conference theme, Maximising Potential for Life, will explore health and social implications of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and will be of interest to consumers, as well as spinal researchers and clinicians.

The ANZSCoS is an association of medical, nursing and allied health personnel working in the field of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in Australia and New Zealand. This Scientific Meeting is held annually to provide a forum for the presentation of scientific papers, co-ordination of spinal cord research efforts, the development of treatment guidelines and protocols, as well as providing a place to learn more about the latest product and services for sufferers of spinal cord injury.

This year’s program features topics covering the early management of acute spinal cord injury, advances in SCI seating, fitness and exercise, psychosocial issues and workplace participation. It will include presentations from two renowned international speakers (Professor Peter Wing and Ms Jean Minkel), as well as Australian and New Zealand leaders in fields such as surgical, medical and rehabilitation management of SCI.

While places are limited, the following events are open to the public, and will be of particular interest to sufferers of spinal cord injury and related conditions, as well as researchers and clinicians in this field:

Workplace Participation Forum
Thursday 1 November, 3.45pm-5.30pm
This session will be facilitated by Mr Dougie Herd, Director Disability Council of NSW, Professor Greg Murphy, Latrobe University and Mr Mark Bagshaw, Disability Consultant

Public Lecture on ‘Spinal Cord Injury – Immediate Care and Long-Term Hopes’
Thursday 1 November, 5.30-6.30pm

The Hon Verity Firth, MP, NSW Minister for Science and Medical Research, will present an address on NSW Government support for research in spinal cord injury and related conditions. This will include discussion of the soon-to-be-launched Australia New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury Network, which brings together leading researchers, clinicians and key stakeholders from across Australia and New Zealand. Supported by the NSW Government, this network will coordinate research efforts in Australia and New Zealand for collaboration and participation in multi-centred clinical trials in spinal cord injury and related conditions.

This will be followed by a keynote presentation by Professor Wing on best practice in spinal cord injury care, particularly immediately post injury and explore emerging treatment options and opportunities to improve health service systems and client outcomes.
