ANZAC Research Institute As the only major independent biomedical research institute in Australia with a primary focus on ageing, the ANZAC Research aims to co-ordinate the highest quality innovative research at all levels from public and population health, to clinical research, molecular physiology (animal models) as well as cell and molecular biology. It is based at Concord Repatriation Hospital.
Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) APAF is Australia's premier protein discovery research/service facility working with international, national and local pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agricultural and academic bodies to discover and purify novel biomarkers for human health and agricultural biotech applications. Additionally APAF is a developer of new technologies for protein discovery, continually forming new collaborations with research groups throughout the Australian and international biotechnology communities.
Bosch Institute The Bosch Institute is a centre for medical research in Sydney and brings together basic and clinical research scientists to tackle major unsolved questions about the human body in health and in illness. It is a joint initiative of the University of Sydney and the NSW Health Service
Centenary Institute The Centenary Institute is an independent medical research centre located at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, NSW. The Institute was established by an Act of the NSW Parliament in 1985 and has formal affiliations with both the University of Sydney Medical School and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Areas of research expertise include skin cancer, solid cancers such as breast cancer and bowel cancer, cancer drug resistance, sudden cardiac death, liver disease, tuberculosis, gene therapy, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Centre for Complementary Medicine Research (CompleMED) Based at the University of Western Sydney, CompleMED is a designated Centre for Research Excellence which promotes evidence-based approaches to the use of complementary medicines within a wide range of healthcare applications, including traditional chinese medicine. A range of issues at the forefront of health services development are tackled by CompleMED, notably the integration of complementary medicine with modern medicine.
Centre for Health Informatics The Centre is a collaborative venture between the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering at the University of NSW and engages in research, development and commercialisation of advanced information and communication technologies for healthcare delivery. The Centre's work is internationally recognised for its groundbreaking contributions in the development of intelligent search systems to support evidence-based healthcare, developing evaluation methodologies for IT, and in understanding how communication shapes the safety and quality of healthcare delivery.
Centre for Immunology The Centre for Immunology is a joint centre of St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, and the University of New South Wales. It is committed to excellence in biomedical research and engages in fundamental scientific research in the fields of immunology and cell biology with relevance to allergy, inflammatory disease and HIV/AIDS.
Centre for Vascular Research The Centre was created to bring together scientists and physicians to research the causes and treatment of occlusion of the blood vessels. Staff are based at the UNSW Faculty of Medicine Wallace Wurth Building, John Curtin School of Medical Research and Monash University.
Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) The Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA) is the only independent medical research institute in Australia dedicated to research into the causes, cure and prevention of childhood cancer. It occupies two sites in Randwick, Sydney and is closely affiliated with both the Sydney Children's Hospital and the University of New South Wales.
Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) The Children's Medical Research Institute conducts fundamental genetic research to understand the genes important for health and development, and the underlying causes of disease. The CMRI is not-for-profit and fully independent and currently has seven research units: Cancer Research, Cell Biology, Cell Transformation, Embryology, Cell Signalling, Gene Therapy and Muscle Development.
Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute The EMAI is in Menangle and is commonly known as the birthplace of Australian agriculture. It maintains a number of Centres of Excellence in the agricultural area.
Garvan Institute of Medical Research The Garvan Institute is one of Australia's leading medical research institutes and is internationally recognised as a leader in gene based medical research, committed to delivering new insights into major diseases and novel ways to prevent and treat these disorders. It was established as an autonomous, non-profit research institute in 1984 and has formal affiliations with the University of NSW and St Vincent's Hospital.
George Institute of International Health The mission of The George Institute for International Health is to help reduce the global burden of non-communicable diseases and injuries through health research, policy development and capacity building. Populations of the Asian and Western Pacific regions are a major focus of Institute activities. It is formally associated with the University of Sydney and the Central Sydney Area Health Service.
Heart Research Institute HRI was established in 1989 as a non-profit company by The National Heart Foundation of Australia. It aims to solve the problem of atherosclerosis, or clogging of the arteries.
Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) supports and promotes research initiatives by the University of Newcastle, Hunter Health and the community generally.
Institute for Eye Research The Institute for Eye Research undertakes and funds a range of research projects directed towards improved understanding and the development of new vision correction products and systems. The Institute also contributes to the development of teaching materials and educational programs in the eyecare area. The programs also contribute to technology transfer, improved eyecare services and the promotion of eyecare awareness throughout the world.
Kolling Institute of Medical Research The Kolling Institute of Medical Research was established in 1920 and is the oldest medical research institute in NSW. Its research is focused on renal medicine, growth research, cancer genetics, laboratory and community genetics, and perinatal medicine. It is located on the grounds of Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.
National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research The National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research was founded in 1986 and is one of Australia's leading medical research centres and is recognised internationally as a leader in the field of research into HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis.
NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre The CTC runs large multicentre clinical trials, takes part in trials of national and international collaborative trial groups and contributes expertise to trials run by others. The CTC was established in 1988 as a research unit of the National Health and Medical Research Council. It is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney.
Pain Management Research Institute (PMRI) PMRI is the only centre in Australia with integrated patient management, research and postgraduate teaching programs in anaesthesia and pain management. The PMRI is a part of the University of Sydney and based at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.
Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (POWMRI) The Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (POWMRI) is situated on the Prince of Wales Hospital site, adjacent to the Medical School of the University of NSW. The Institute was opened in 1993 and has grown to become the largest aggregates of research on the brain and nervous system in Australia.
Save Sight Institute The Institute is part of University of Sydney and provides clinical services at Sydney Eye Hospital and Westmead Hospital and organises and teaches graduate and post-graduate programs in ophthalmology. The SSI conducts science vision research in three key areas: clinical, community and laboratory.
Sax Institute The Sax Institute is a unique organisation in Australia and has at its foundation a coalition of University and research groups undertaking population health and health services research in NSW.
Schizophrenia Research Institute The Schizophrenia Research Institute is a non-profit, NHMRC accredited, independent research institute undertaking world-class studies to understand the causes of schizophrenia.Formed in 1996 and funded by Government, corporate and private donations, it is an "institute without walls" which utilises research and infrastructure facilities located in teaching hospitals, universities and research institutes, as well as domestic and international collaborations, in driving its proactive research agenda.
Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Established in memory of the renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Victor Chang AC, the Institute conducts research into all forms of heart disease, but its primary focus is the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart muscle diseases. The Institute was launched in 1994 and is now a major partner in the St Vincent's Campus and is affiliated with the University of New South Wales.
Westmead Millennium Institute The Westmead Millennium Institute is one of Australia's premier medical research institutes and is based at Westmead in Sydney. Its research focus encompasses biomedical research in cancer and leukaemia, microbiology and infectious diseases, immunology, multiple sclerosis, liver, kidney and eye disease and genetic epidemiology, using the basic tools of molecular and cell biology, especially genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, cell imaging and transgenics.
Woolcock Institute of Medical Research The Woolcock Institute of Medical Research is Australia 's leading respiratory and sleep research organisation. World-class researchers investigate the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breathing and sleep-related disorders. Located in Glebe, Sydney , the Woolcock conducts research into: asthma, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sleep apnea, emphysema, allergies, chronic bronchitis, rhinitis and air pollution. The Clinical Research Operations Group conducts clinical trials across the range of breathing and sleep disorders.

Cancer Council NSW The Cancer Council was established in 1955 by an Act of the NSW Parliament. The Act empowered The Cancer Council to raise money from the public in order to assist and foster research and investigation into the causation, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Cancer Institute NSW The Cancer Institute NSW was established in July 2003 through the Cancer Institute NSW Act 2003 as a response to the need to further decrease the devastating impact of cancer on society. The Cancer Institute NSW supports and commission's cancer research, enhances prevention and early detection programs, commission's innovative cancer treatment programs, and develops cancer education and information programs. The Cancer Institute works closely with OSMR to ensure its research programs are consistent with NSW Government policy and strategy.
National Health and Medical Research Council The Research Committee covers the spectrum of health and medical research, including biomedical, clinical, and public health.
Research networks & hubs
Cellulose Valley The Cellulose Valley headquarters are located at the Southern Cross University Lismore campus in Northern New South Wales. The primary purpose of Cellulose Valley is to create synergies between the stakeholders in the natural plant products industry, including researchers, manufacturers, educators, growers and health practitioners.
National Institute of Complementary Medicine The National Institute of Complementary Medicine's mission is to build the capacity of complementary medicine research across Australia, effectively connecting complementary medicine researchers and professionals with the broader research community, industry and other stakeholders, to provide strategic focus and foster excellence in research.
NSW Stem Cell Network The Network organises events to discuss ethical, scientific and other developments in stem cell research.
University of Sydney Cancer Research Network The Network is a cross-faculty initiative which was established to link cancer researchers within the University of Sydney and its teaching hospitals and affiliated research institutes and institutions in order to build high quality cancer research capacity and achieve international cancer research excellence.

AusBiotech AusBiotech is Australia's Biotechnology Industry Organisation, which represents over 2,550 members, covering the human health, agricultural, medical device, bioinformatics, environmental and industrial sectors in biotechnology. AusBiotech is dedicated to the development, growth and prosperity of the Australian biotechnology industry, by providing initiatives to drive sustainability and growth, outreach and access to markets, and representation and support for members nationally and around the world.
Australian-New Zealand Biotech Alliance (ANZBA) ANZBA is a partnership to promote leading R&D and business opportunities in the region, working directly with industry and the research sector. The members of ANZBA are the Australian State and Territory Governments and the Government of New Zealand.

Australian Museum The Australian Museum was established in 1827 and is Australia's first museum. It has unique and extensive collections of natural science and cultural artefacts and an innovative program of research into Australia's environments and indigenous cultures. Biodiversity, geodiversity and the origins and sustainability of Australia's environments and cultures are the key focus of this research.
Powerhouse Museum Australia's largest and most popular museum is located in Darling Harbour, Sydney. Its unique and diverse collection of 385,000 objects spans history, science, technology, design, industry, decorative arts, music, transport and space exploration.
