Medical Research Support Program
The NSW Medical Research Support Program (MRSP) is intended to foster and promote excellence in health and medical research, and to maximise and optimise funding and support to health and medical research groups in New South Wales.
The specific objectives of the program are to:
- provide infrastructure funding on a fair and equitable basis for major NSW research organisations which carry out health and medical research and development; and
- align this funding with the objectives of the NSW Health and Medical Research Plan.
Under the program, infrastructure grants are awarded to research institutes on a competitive basis.
This program replaces the NSW Infrastructure Grants Program (IGP), which previously provided competitive infrastructure funding to health and medical research organisations in NSW. The IGP underwent a review in 2005, and the MRSP was created as a result of this review.
The NSW Medical Research Support Program is targeted at organisations which:
- have health and medical R&D as their primary function;
- are located in NSW and can demonstrate formal membership of a designated NSW medical research hub; and
- are affiliated with the NSW health system and have significant interactions with one or more universities in NSW.
Grants have been awarded to health and medical research institutes which have attracted peer-reviewed grants with a total value of at least $2 million per annum since 2003.
Results of the funding round for the current triennium (2006-2009) have not yet been announced.
