NSW Life Sciences Research Awards

The NSW Government’s Life Sciences Research Awards are designed to attract outstanding life science research workers, not currently resident in NSW, to further their career in NSW. The research work should have a strong translational potential in any life sciences discipline but with priority areas being health and the environment.

Awards in this round will be for grants totalling $220,000 (incl. GST) over three years. An additional $220,000 (incl. GST) minimum must be committed by the applicant’s host institution for the application to be eligible for consideration. It is a condition of this round of the Awards that the host institution provides direct matching funding for the Award. 

Individual research workers who are interested in applying for a NSW Life Sciences Research Award should contact appropriate NSW institutions to discuss opportunities to work in NSW. Research workers already resident in NSW are not eligible. One joint application completed by the research worker and the institution should be submitted.

About the NSW Life Sciences Research Awards

The NSW Life Sciences Research Awards (previously known as the NSW BioFirst Awards) are an initiative that supports the NSW Government’s Statement on Innovation and the State Plan. These innovative and prestigious awards are designed to enhance research in the life sciences in NSW by attracting leading life sciences researchers to NSW.

The aims of the NSW Life Sciences Research Awards are to:

  • Support excellent, internationally competitive research by individuals.
  • Build and sustain internationally competitive research teams.
  • Attract leading research workers to key positions in NSW.
  • Support research that will translate into economic, health, environmental and social benefits for NSW.
  • Expand the knowledge base and research capability in NSW.
  • Encourage an outcomes focus to publicly funded research in this State.

Past Winners

The first round of the awards closed in February 2007 and the second round closed in September 2007. Awards in the second round were for grants of AU$110,000 per year (incl GST) for four years.
