Science and medical research play a vital role in the continued growth and better health of our community, environment, and economy. From increased life expectancy and new treatments for disease, to technologies that change the way we live and work, and the application of knowledge it generates, to addressing environmental challenges – scientific research affects us all.
Part of the NSW Department of State and Regional Development since 2006, the NSW Office for Science and Medical Research plays a crucial role in bringing together the diverse strands of scientific and medical research endeavour in NSW and providing support and an increased public profile for the sector. This website, along with the regular e-newsletter, is a great way to get to know the diversity of the sector and the many opportunities available to researchers in this State.

- NSW headquarters 11 of Australia’s Cooperative Research Centres (CRC), and its many research institutions work with an additional 36 CRCs. These CRCs perform an important role in NSW – bringing together researchers with industry to achieve commercial outcomes. NSW Government is a partner in 18 CRCs.
- The CSIRO has a significant presence in NSW, employing 1175 staff in 11 locations.
- NSW has the highest level of R&D investment in biotechnology in Australia: approximately $1 billion per annum. NSW is also strong in attracting competitive Commonwealth grants and committing State funds to medical and biological science.
- NSW is home to 80% of multinational pharmaceutical companies in Australia and 70% of pharmaceutical companies with regional headquarters in Australia.
- NSW is home to many of Australia’s leading research institutes, hospitals, and universities. We have world-class strengths across a range of research areas including proteomics, immunology, cancer research, respiratory medicine, cell and tissue engineering, diagnostics and medical devices.
